Trying an activity once does not always justify owning all the equipment. Borrowing or hiring can be a sensible way to learn what you need.
Use a reputable source and check that the item is suitable, correctly fitted and in safe condition. Ask for instruction where needed. Safety equipment with an unknown history, including a helmet that may have been damaged, is not a good place to improvise a saving.
Clarify the return time, charges, cleaning expectations and what to do if something goes wrong. If borrowing from a friend, be equally clear about how the item should be used and cared for.
After the trial, note what mattered in practice. The right size, a manageable weight or an easy adjustment may be more important than a feature you expected to want. You can then decide whether to buy, hire again or choose a different activity with information from an actual experience.
