A dog walk can become a brisk trip between obligations, particularly on a busy morning. Yet the dog may be far more interested in a patch of grass than in completing your usual circuit.
Choose a permitted route and follow local leash rules. Bring waste bags and whatever your dog needs for the conditions. Distance, temperature and terrain should suit the individual animal; ask your veterinarian about limits if you are unsure.
Leave room for pauses instead of treating every stop as an interruption. If you want a separate purposeful walk for yourself, it may be easier to plan that another time than to make the dog fit an outing that does not suit it.
On narrow paths, keep enough control and space for other users to pass comfortably. Not everyone wants to meet a dog, however friendly. A shorter walk with time to explore and considerate handling can work better for everyone than a long route that leaves you both pulling in different directions.
