The quickest route often follows the busiest road. It is easy to choose it automatically, particularly when a map presents the alternative as an inconvenient extra few blocks.

Look one street over. A parallel residential road may have less traffic noise, more room to pass and fewer vehicle entrances. It may also have poor lighting or a missing pavement, so inspect the whole route rather than assuming quiet means suitable.

Try the alternative during daylight, without a tight deadline. Notice the crossings at either end, where the pavement narrows, and whether the route still feels useful when you are carrying a bag. A pleasant middle section cannot compensate for a difficult junction you must cross twice.

Keep both versions in mind. The direct route might suit a quick errand, while the quieter one makes sense when you want an unhurried walk. Having a choice is more valuable than declaring one route the permanent winner. Streets serve different purposes at different times of day.
