The difficult part of an evening walk can happen before your shoes are on. You picture several routes, remember an errand, check the weather twice, and somehow the available time disappears.
Choose just the first turn. Left toward the library, right toward the little park, or straight along the quieter street. You can settle the rest once you are moving. This works especially well in a familiar neighborhood where you know the crossings and have several easy ways home.
There is still a little planning worth doing. Check that the route is open, that you will have enough daylight, and that you have what you need for the conditions. A spontaneous walk does not require a spontaneous approach to traffic or weather.
On the way back, notice which part you would happily repeat. Perhaps it was a tree-lined block rather than the destination. That detail gives tomorrow's walk a starting point without turning tonight's outing into an assignment.
